The following is an A to Z quick reference guide on understanding terms used in iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking.

Bootloader – A piece of code embedded inside an iPhone chip that runs before any iOS is running.

Cydia – A software application for the iOS that lets a user browse and download applications for a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Fuzzyband – An iPhone app in Cydia to downgrade baseband. This only works on iPhone 3G with bootloader version 5.08.

iOS – An operating system used in various Apple mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Springboard – The standard application that manages the iOS (formerly iPhone OS) home screen

Tethered Jailbreak – Each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.
