How to Fix iOS 5 iMessage on Hacktivated/Jailbroken iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 Using SAM
Can’t get iMessage to work on your hacktivated iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4? The following instructions should help fix the issue.
UPDATE: Got an iPhone 3GS locked to AT&T? Unlock it permanently using this.
1. Launch Cydia and add to your source:
repo.bingner.com
2. Once added, go ahead and install SAM (Subscribers Artifical Module) and SAMpref.
3. Launch SAMpref and Click “Revert Lockdownd to Stock” in Settings > SAM (this deactivates your hacktivation).
4. Go to Settings > SAM and tap on “De-Activate iPhone”
5. Connect your iPhone to iTunes to activate it.
6. If you already have iPusher app installed, remove it now.
7. Navigate to Settings > SAM > Utilities > tap on Backup Activation and then followed by on Restore Activation.
8. Reboot your iPhone and then sync it with iTunes.
9. Install free iPusher App from here.
10. Reboot your iPhone and then sync it with iTunes. Make sure your iPhone is connected to a Wifi that has an active internet connection.
11. Open iPusher app and tap on Test Push Notifications button. If you see a pop-up saying Yay, push notifications work fine! then it means your Push Notifications are working fine
12. Turn off iMessage.
13. Reboot iPhone.
14. Turn on iMessage.
Common Issues (Compiling)
1. Can’t get passed iTunes activation – Check if “Hacktivation” in SAM is on, then take a look at the text underneath it on what you have to do; then turn “Hacktivation” off and connect to iTunes again.

Change your DNS server to 8.8.8.8 by going to Settings>Wi-Fi>Blue arrow next to network>DNS and change it to 8.8.8.8

First two times I tried to do the final reboot (after turning iMessage off) my phone froze trying to find T-mobile. It then rebooted, then using redsn0w both times I turned the phone back on. The third time it worked, with no issues and iMessage working. I’m a little afraid due to the first two (somewhat serious) errors, but as of this moment it seems to be working fine. Thank you.
thats what happened to me aswel, except with 1 reboot, the phone just turned off on my. This actually happened once before while after the sn0wbreeze jailbreak….-.-

My iMessage is apparently activated but every time I tried to send a message it doesn’t get delivered, is there a fix for that?

FOR YOU THAT HAVENT GOTTEN IT TO WORK YET. If you can, find out the country and carrier that came with the SIM card when purchased fro the store. Then go to SAMpref and fill that in. If you can't remember, go to Settings – Genereal- About – Model (xxxxxx) and google that model to find out the country and carrier. After that go to SAMpref and make sure to tap on the SIMID that came with that carrier info you previously added. After that iTunes should let you through and later Push Notifications will work like a charm. Cheers

Actually the waiting for activation disappeared. now it just says that imessages can be sent between iphone ipad and ipod touch, which is normal. so yea I'm happy

im on vodafone in egypt. ios5 BB 06.15.00, I have used the sampref and that worked great activating through itunes. Now i can not get the iPusher to work on 3G network or on Wifi. Also even after following the directions posted i can not send with imessages. Its still coming up "Not Delivered" under the messages.

I followed the above steps, iPusher showed my notifications to be working. However when I went to Settings –> Message screen and tried to toggle the Imessage switch on and off, it immediately would turn off. Also this screen did not show any other options besides the iMessage switch and the character count option. The receive at options were missing.
After days of breaking my head on this and iMessage not working, I finally hit the erase all content and data option on the iPhone (didnt do this before because I have a ultrasn0w unlocked phone). On doing this the phone restarted and after i booted tethered on iOs 5, the message screen now showed all teh settings.
PS: I am only posting this with the hope that all people with similar issues get a resolution on this. I have tried to include typical google search keywords in my answer so this gets indexed, after over 100 searches and visiting 100's of webpages, I couldnt find the solution until I reached this solution by chance..

Can't pass itunes activation, as my iphone is working on gevey sim and the model is MC603, which should be Canadian Rogers or Fido, tried both on SAM through Country and even by Packages, and atlast by auto detect but cannot by pas itunes activation, each time its says invalid sim on itunes, trying for last 3 days unsuccessful and advices are welcomed

worked well with 3GS on jailbroken and unlocked ios5 with ipad baseband. Push notifications now work (previously didn't). Confirmed with iPusher. iMessage still says "Waiting for activation". Receive at only allows email addresses, yet, iMessage messages to another iMessage user are in blue and working.

It's been 3 days that I'm looking for solutions online, trying, restoring, switching sim cards etc etc….I really don't know what else to do!
I thought I was just fixed my FaceTime and iMessage "waiting for activation" problem following these instructions, but I only followed the first 5s, since when I was trying to go back to settings my phone was crashing. So I just rebooted it and when it re started, the message saying that the carrier might charge for international text popped up and that's it, went to check into Settings>FaceTime et voila, everything showed up as it was supposed to!!!!
I thought it was done but in fact it doesn't work at all!!! It just shows my FaceTime and iMessage are activated and have been verified, it even says "You can be reached for your video calls at:" with my cell number (in gray) and my email address, but it's not working….I don't understand and don't know what else to do!!!
When I was under iOS 4.3.3 I was able to edit the Carrier.plist file in System/Library/Carrier Bundles/ looking at other Tmobile carriers codes and copying one of them, pasted again and changed the name to Tmobile_us. Then I put my own cell number between

changed
<key>Verified</key><false/>
to
<key>Verified</key><true/>
saved the file, reboot and voila, everything worked just fine!!!
But on iOS 5.0.1 I can't seem to find the Carrier.plist file and I can't find a freaking T-Mobile US Carrier bundle to download on my iPhone 4!

Hi thanks for tutorial tried it all but my 3gs 6.15.00 new boot room don’t want to activate. It show in info Factory activated. Whet turn off Hacktivate in SAM settings then iTunes don’t recognize my iPhone say The SIM card not appear to be supported. Do i have to uninstall ultrasn0w before activate with SAM?
Also i don’t have original SIM card and don’t know exactly which operator my phone locket to. Can I still activate to WildCard Activation?

Just enter SAM Setting again and set Enabled (unser Subscriber Artificial Module) to ON then restart.

Yes it works with Gevey Sim. Even thought it will say "Waiting for activation".. its still works.. After you follow the steps above make sure to send a friend that has a legit iphone a message and see if it works.. Thanks Op for the info.. So happy.

I was relying on the redsnOw to hactivate for me in order to bypass the activation process because I was using GEVEY Sim. if i depend with itunes to re-activate, will this work?? Please let me know because I don't have the original SIM that came with the phone.

Here is my experience:-
My wife phone on iOS5.0.1, jailbroken and unlocked (Ultrasn0w, thanks to Dev team) was working fine except for FaceTime & iMessages. Also in settings, My number :Unknown (Grayed).
Face time was not working at all & iMessages were sent through her email Id, not through her mobile no. Didn’t have any issue with push notifications.
So I don’t exactly know what worked for me (SAMPref technique or my last step), after going through SAM guide as above, I still were stuck on unknown number grayed.
tried comparing it with my iPhone same config & iOS, except mine was officially unlocked and had no issues at all with iMessage activitation or FaceTime, and my number was also showing correct.
So as I was saying that after doing the SAM thing and no luck, I found 1 extra file in my wife phone, which was not in my phone (Carrier.plist). I renamed it and now wife no showing, FaceTime & iMessages working like a charm.
Now the technical part, this file, which should be deleted is in the following location:-
/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/Carrier.plist
Be aware that the above location consists of two things, 1 file (Carrier.plist) & 1 folder(/iPhone), just delete the plist file.
I used Ifile (from Cydia) to delete this, followed by switching on plane mode & then back to off ( a reboot will also work).

actually once i reboot my phone i get the same problem again. the blanked out number and still imessage and facetime do not work. Also i checked iFile again that file is not there anymore so it is not like i can redelete it. What can i do?

After trying this guide without luck, I got Carrier: Not Available, and My Number: Unknown.
Luckily, here's how I get it to work on my ip4 lock:
1. (assume that you already enabled SAM)
2. enter SAM through settings or SAMref, under Subscriber Artificial Modulem, use these settings:
+ Enabled: ON
+ Method: By Country and Carrier
+ Country: <Choose your country>
+ Carrier: <Choose your carrier>
+ SIM ID: this is a list, just choose one ID from that (I'm not sure how many items are there since in my case, I only have one)
+ the rest is OFF
3. Reboot and wait for the Carrier to be detected. You may receive an 'Invalid SIM' notification at this stage. Just reboot again.
4. To check whether your carrier is detected, go to General > About > Carrier. If it no longer displays 'Not Available' then you're done.
5. Just turn on Facetime and iMessage. Waiting time may take 10 minutes.

hello guys, i have a problem, i did once the hall procedure with the GEVEY sim insert, but when i went to sync it with itunes i had error, after that i delete SAM and did the same with out sim at all, everything was fine, but when i was trying to activate the GEVEY sim nothing was happening. no accept page. i tried a lot of time with just rebooting as i read that by rebooting after a while it works but i didn't have any luck. any one which any ideas . plzzzzz

Im on a iphone 4, gsm, AT&T originally, but now unlocked (through GEVEY) and jailbroken through redsn0w, running 5.0.1 untethered, and the carrier is VIVA in dominican republic
I lost my original at&t card to activate normally so my only option is to hacktivate with redsn0w, i can confirm that facetime and imessage were working perfectly with GEVEY back on 5.0 tethered, the problem began with the untethered update to 5.0.1
I do everything in the tutorial up until it wants to be activated with itunes. Itunes WILL NOT ALLOW The activation to even begin when it hits me with an error!! The phone will not even show up on itunes unless i just DFU and restore again with redsn0w…. There really seems to be no way around this. Has anyone figured this out pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!!!

Is ur phone a MC603 A or B model? If its a MC603B then it may be locked in a UK carrier such a Hatchinsons Uk or Vodafone or Orange… Hope this helps

Hey, I have a jailbroken (redsnow), unlocked (ultrasnow) 3GS with iOS5.0.1. Also, I'm using the SIM car which I should be using (the one that came with my phone).
A few things:
1. I don't get a "Backup Activation" option, I just get "Attempt Activation" and "Restore Activation".
2. When I click Restore activation" I get the error message: "Unable to fetch activation record"
3. Does it matter if I don't use iPush (don't have a credit card, so I can't download it…)
4. Does this mess in any way with my unblock?
Obviously this didn't work… any suggestiones?

I have a problem with the SAM thing. Here is what happened. I wanted push notification, imessage on my recently jailbroken iphone which uses Gevey Ultra for unlock. So I installed the SAM and I started following the steps. I went as far as clicking the ‘Revert lockdown to Stock’ which gave me a successful message, then I was supposed to sync with itunes, but I tunes said that my sim was invalid and stuff. So I tried again and again no luck. Then I thought it would be a good idea to uninstall the SAM thing and then I rebooted my iphone. Now just when the iphone is on, it says connect to itunes and makes me choose wi-fi networks. When I connect to itunes, it says, ‘The sim card inserted in this iphone does not seem to be supported’. Im living in Africa, so there is no way I can get the official sim card. What can I do please tell me.

You have to jailbreak your phone so that you can hacktivate the phone again. Use redsn0w_mac_0.9.10b6

after i reverted to lock down im stuck with activation required and i dont have an attnt sim card -__________________-
I have mine completely restored to factory settings. Its jailbroken with cydia. I cant update to ios 5 because I had my phone unlocked from telus to rogers meaning if I update it will re lock itself and I have to start the process all over again. Is there any way to get I messege without updating to ios 5 through cydia or some sort of jailbroken app? please please please help me ive run out of options.

Hi, My iphone sprint 4s ios 5.01 was unlocked my Sam for tmobile. I saved activation ticket. Now if I switch to new tmobile sim card with new number, can I used activation ticket for new sim card? Thanks so much!

I just wanted to say that although I am VERY late on this post… everything worked like a charm for me! I was very skeptical at first because I am gevey unlocked, but it still worked! I am so excited and very grateful! My facetime & imessages were previously activated and just failing so I figured I was missing just one last simple step, but your instructions did the trick! iphone 4 5.1.1 unlocked to simple mobile

tested both my facetime & imessage with another iphone user and facetimed myself from my mac facetime. Working perfectly thanks!!
Oh and I did ALL of your instructions without activating my gevey which is a process I have to do everytime I reboot my phone in order to have phone service so MAYBE those with gevey's unable to get this to work should remove their gevey. You won't need your phone service for this process. Only your wifi. Activate your gevey after everything is complete
